Das Unternehmen hat seinen Ursprung im amerikanischen San Francisco und wurde dort 1966 von Douglas Tompkins gegründet. Eigentlich wollte Tompkins einen Store für Bergsteiger Equipment eröffnen, doch 1968 zog er ans andere Ufer der San Francisco Bay und begann mit der Produktion der hauseigenen Marke The North Face.

Der Name The North Face entstand aus dem Gedanken heraus, dass auf der nördlichen Erdhemisphäre die Nordseite eines Berges die härteste und am schwierigsten zu bewältigende ist. Das Logo zeigt die Felssilhouette des Half Dome im Yosemite-Nationpark der USA.

Der derzeitige Eigentümer von The North Face ist der US-amerikanische VF-Konzern. Mit seiner breiten Produktrange von funktionellen Jacken, Schuhen, alle Arten von Oberbekleidung bis hin zur professionellen Outdoorausrüstung gilt The North Face als Weltmarktführer und Weltmarke im Bereich Outdoor.
